IR and visible light face recognition

چکیده
This paper presents the results of several large-scale studies of face recognition employing visible light and infra-red (IR) imagery in the context of principal component analysis. We find that in a scenario involving time lapse between gallery and probe, and relatively controlled lighting, (1) PCA-based recognition using visible light images outperforms PCA-based recognition using infra-red images, (2) the combination of PCA-based recognition using visible light and infra-red imagery substantially outperforms either one individually. In a same session scenario (i.e. nearsimultaneous acquisition of gallery and probe images) neither modality is significantly better than the other. These experimental results reinforce prior research that employed a smaller data set, presenting a convincing argument that, even across a broad experimental spectrum, the behaviors enumerated above are valid and consistent.

Seeing People in the Dark: Face Recognition in Infrared Images
An IR image of the human face presents its unique heat-signature and can be used for recognition. The characteristics of IR images maintain advantages over visible light images, and can be used to improve algorithms of human face recognition in several aspects. IR images are obviously invariant under extreme lighting conditions (including complete darkness). The main findings of this research a...
متن کاملIR and visible-light face recognition using canonical correlation analysis
This paper proposes a novel multispectral feature extraction method according to the idea of canonical correlation analysis (CCA). Instead of extracting two groups of features with the same pattern (modality) as usual, the work explores another type of application of CCA that for extracting most correlated features from different face modalities to form effective discriminant vectors for recogn...
متن کاملComparison of visible and infra-red imagery for face recognition
This paper presents initial results in a study comparing the eflectiveness of visible and infra-red ( IR) imagery for detecting and recognizing faces in areas where personnel identification i s critical, (e.g., airports and secure buildings). W e compare the effectiveness of visible versus IR imagery by running three face recognition algorithms on a database of images collected for this study. ...
متن کاملFace recognition by fusing thermal infrared and visible imagery
Thermal infrared (IR) imagery offers a promising alternative to visible imagery for face recognition due to its relative insensitive to variations in face appearance caused by illumination changes. Despite its advantages, however, thermal IR has several limitations including that it is opaque to glass. The focus of this study is on the sensitivity of thermal IR imagery to facial occlusions caus...
متن کاملHierarchical fusion of multi-spectral face images for improved recognition performance
This paper presents a two level hierarchical fusion of face images captured under visible and infrared light spectrum to improve the performance of face recognition. At image level fusion, two face images from different spectrums are fused using DWT based fusion algorithm. At feature level fusion, the amplitude and phase features are extracted from the fused image using 2D log polar Gabor wavel...
